Tom Flight - Two Halves of a Life, by Brian Jenner
Imagine a pile of clothing on a sea shore. A middle-aged man enters the water and swims out to sea until he disappears. • Notes
    • "He was my grandfather, born Old Brompton, (Gillingham) 1870, died 1949 Chatham. He served in the navy for 25 years as an engine room artificer. Mediterranean, Ascension Island, China were areas where he spent much time; also periods back home at HMS Pembroke, Chatham. A whizz at maths which he unsuccessfully tried to pass on to me! Never wore an overcoat - did exercises in front of an open window every morning - tried to toughen me up as a boy (failed!) with boxing. I did take to the long country walks he took me on, though. He played football 2 or 3 times in the mid-1890s for an amateur club that later became Gillingham FC - scored several goals; also played cricket for his ship on Ascension. A larger than life character who had a big influence on me as a boy after he sold up and moved in with us while my father was at the war." Brian Jenner
