  • Notes
    • Early on in my research I found there was no reliable record as to who were the parents of my 2x great grandfather, George Willis.

In the Barham Parish Baptism Records, Mary Willis, George's mother is described as 'Spinster' and George as 'base born' (i.e. illegitimate). Meaning that it's unlikely to find out who George's father was.

Searching the parish records there were two 'candidates' for Mary. Either (1) Mary Ann Willis (born 1801), the daughter of Ingram Willis & Elizabeth Pilcher. She married George Benefield in 1823, two years after George was born. OR (2) Mary Willis (born 1804), the 'base-born' (ie illegitimate) daughter of Martha Willis. (Note: Ingram and Martha were brother & sister).

However 'candidate (1) is unlikely because if George Benefield was George's biological father, then why did he keep the surname Willis? In those days before the adoption acts were in place, many children used the surname of their mother's husband, even if they were not his child, especially if they were very young at the time when their mother married.

Back then a woman who was not married and had a baby were called before the parish council who tried to find out who the father was in order that the parish would not have to support the mother and child (on the parish). Research has been made in the “Parish Chest” notes of Barham which contains quite a few references to children born to unmarried women. But as yet no refererence to Mary Willis and George has been found. Mary was aged 20 when George was born, and George Benefield aged 23. He living in Womenswold, and Mary in Barham. It's likely that if George was Benefield's baby he would have married her as soon as he was able and given the child his surname.

So we are left with Mary, the 'baseborn' daughter of Martha Willis.
