• Notes

  George Willis was born in Canterbury, Kent, England in 1872. He was a handsome man of average height, with black hair and deep blue eyes. Grandad was a cabin boy on a sailing ship and later joined the East Kent Regiment (The Buffs). He saw action during the Boer War in South Africa (1899-1902). On leaving the army, Grandad settled in India and married Daisy (Nana) and joined the GIPR, Agra, as a railway guard. Being an Englishman he was considered a 'covenanted' hand and therefore received a much higher salary with special privileges such as long service leave and travel allowances, than his Indian counterparts. He later took up the position of GIPR Institute Manager. Grandad George Willis would spend several hours with us almost every day. He would walk with us across a large grass farm situated at the back of our house. Grandad would sometimes wander away from home for days and weeks at a time. The thing about Grandad that was of great worry and concern to us was that he was not able to understand why he did this. We knew that he was a heavy drinker in the past but had not had a drop of alcohol all the time were in Ambala. Maybe he was suffering from Alzheimer's disease, unknown to us at this time, or that he felt neglected and obligatory in his latter years. Sadly Grandad died in Jullundur in 1945 at the age of 73. I idolised him and miss him to this day. [2]
