  • Notes
    • In the 1901 Census John(and his step-son, William Nicholls) list their occupation as 'Harbour Contractor's Diver's Attendant'.

It was the attendant's job to look after the diver he was engaged by, to assist him with the putting on of his elaborate equipment, watch him go down below the surface of the water in the diving bell, and then to stand by in readiness to deal with any signal made to him by the man who had vanished from his sight. Sometimes the diver made his descent from an anchored vessel, generally a ketch known as a 'diver's boat', and sometimes from the edge of a pier, or other structure overlooking the spot where work was being taken in hand.

    Residence:
    • The Medical Records in John's Attestation Papers note that from 18 - 25 May 1884 he was in hospital following a near-drowning in Pembroke Dock. The cause was listed as 'accident on duty'. Further enquiries have revealed that the moat around the fort at Pembroke never held water, so to get their weekly bath they went to the river. It appears some men got into problems, and on this day the water was running very fast and they had to be pulled out and taken to the hospital. However one died in the night.
