The Legend of Fred FISHER's Ghost
The legend of Fisher's ghost is a popular Australian story dating to the early 19th century. It arose from a series of historical events which occurred in Campbelltown, now a large urban population centre on the southwestern outskirts of Sydney, but at the time a remote rural outpost.

"Frederick Fisher was accused of (forging or something like that) anyway, he was sent to Australia as a convict. He was sent in 1815 on a convict ship called the "Atlas". Because he was a learned man (could read & write fluently) he worked off his crime in Australia & bought a few farms, land, was also starting up some paper making business etc. The ex-con who was Fred's partner in the papermaking business killed him.
I don't know much (in fact I don't really know anything) about Samuel & Elizabeth, other than Samuel was a bookseller in Bethnal Green. I think Elizabeth's maiden name was Woonough, but I can't find anything on her. With a last name like Woonough you would think info about her would stick out a mile long.
I have been told that the Fisher's go way back into Elizabethan times, & one of them ( I think his name was John or Thomas Fisher) had something to do with publishing a Shakespear play called A Mid Summer's Night Dream), but don't quote me on that, as I am probably dreaming. But I think that is how the story goes...
I just basicaly learned these kinds of things about my Fisher ancestors. I cannot prove any of it other than the story of Fred the Ghost. Samuel & Elizabeth (Woonough) Fisher had a son named Samuel, & the Fisher family sent Samuel Jr to Australia to try to find what was ritefully to be inherited for them. I had found the birth/baptism for Samuel Jr, (Samuel & Edwin were baptised together on the same day) but then I hit a dead end & I could never find anything more on him. I guess because when he went to Australia he never came back to England. So now all these years of not being able to find him, now makes sence. But apparently the Fishers have been booksellers & drapers for many generations back.
