In 1848 Matthew was convicted of sheep stealing and highway robbery at the Canterbury Assizes. He was sentenced to ten years transportation to Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania).

Edward Betts-Hopper was an influential member of the New Zealand Company. Although born in Dover, England he sailed to New Zealand, arriving in Wellington on board the "Oriental," on January 31st ,1840.
Edward died on 17 September 1840 as a result of a boating accident
