Charles was born in 1896 in Upper Hardres, Kent to parents Walter and Ada Gammon (nee Keeler).
In the 1901 and 1911 Censuses, Charles’s father was listed as a farmer on Fryarne Park Farm in Stelling Minnis in Kent.
Charles originally enlisted at Canterbury as Private 205304 in the Royal West Surrey Regiment. He later transferred to 2nd Battalion the Manchester Regiment.
