William was born in 1896 in the village of Martin in Kent, the third of 7 children born to Isaac and Louisa Harvey (nee Hopper). He enlisted on 30th November 1914 at the age of 19 and his occupation at the time was Kitchen Porter.
His medical records show that William was 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighed 136lbs (9st 10lbs).
After training, he was posted on 12 May 1915. The records reveal that on two occasions he was punished for being absent from Parade.
William was reported missing 25 September 1915.
