Thomas was born in 1895 in Wanganui, New Zealand to Robert and Harriet Benefield (nee Simons). Robert and Harriet had emigrated from Kent, England sometime before 1887.
Thomas joined the New Zealand Expeditionary Force and embarked for Military service from Wellington on 14 July 1917 on board the SS Waitemata, sailing for Plymouth, England.
He was killed in action ‘in the field’ in France.
